Commission sets IRT events
Ironton Rail Trail Oversight Commission will hold its annual spring historical walk beginning 9 a.m. March 23 on the IRT. The walk - the first of many 2019 events - starts at the Chestnut Street barn, just west of MacArthur Road.
The four-hour leisurely walk has stops for walkers to view historical sites and landmarks, including the first anthracite-fueled iron company and the first Portland Cement Company in America. At least 23 historical sites and landmarks will be presented.
The trail surface of macadam and packed millings was designed for the comfort of walkers, runners and bicyclists traversing the 9-mile IRT loop. The walk will be approximately 7 miles.
Beginning 8 a.m. June 9, the IRT will hold its 23rd anniversary celebration and pavilion dedication, along with a 5K walk/run, at the athletic fields of the Levans Road trailhead in North Whitehall Township.
The 10K run/walk will be held Aug. 24, beginning 8 a.m. at Saylor Park, Second Street, Coplay, next to Coplay Parkway and Saylor Cement Kilns.
For additional details on either walk/run, call 610-966-9939 or email cschmidty44@outlook.com.
The IRT Oversight Commission will participate in the Whitehall fall parade in October (date and time to be announced) and Coplay Recreation & Welfare Association’s community Halloween parade 7 p.m. Oct. 15.
The second IRT historical walk is set for Oct. 26, with the same time and location as the spring event.
Other events on the trail include a pediatric cancer 8K run/5K walk 8 a.m. April 13 at Saylor Park; a Trot for Trykes 10K/5K/1-mile run/bike 8 a.m. April 27 at American Club of Coplay, Cherry Street; and a Whitehall Rotary Club 8K/5K Dec. 7 (time to be announced) at Saylor Park.
