Council to vote on 2019 budget

Northampton Borough Council is expected to vote on the 2019 budget at its Dec. 6 meeting.

The $6.4 million budget, introduced at the Nov. 29 meeting, retains the 10-mill real estate tax levy.

Borough Manager LeRoy Brobst called it “a tough budget with challenges.” However, the spending plan, which is expected to pass unanimously, does not include a property tax hike.

For a residence with a $50,000 assessed valuation, a $100,000 appraised value, the $500 real estate tax bill is unchanged. For properties with a $100,000 assessment, $200,000 appraisal, the $1,000 tax is retained.

Northampton Borough’s real estate levy is favorable when compared with other boroughs in the county.

Councilman Ed Pany commended Brobst for his diligence and “sharp pencil” in coming up with a budget with no increase in real estate taxes.

“You are my second best student,” Pany said, referring to Brobst having been his student years before at Northampton High School.
