With districts next, Kids track reflects on good year

Northampton’s track program had a productive two days at the East Penn Conference meet as well as during the regular season.

The Konkrete Kids had six medal winners at the EPC meet, and each of them advanced to the PIAA District 11 meet at Whitehall High School this week. Overall, the Kids sent 22 girls and 19 boys to the two-day event, which was pushed backed to Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

“We’ve had a pretty good year,” said head coach Tim Caffrey. “All of our athletes performed well and they should continue to succeed in the district meet.

“We also should have a number of them who could move on to states. Overall, it has been a good year.”

Alex Barrall recorded a mark of 10-9 in the pole vault to take top individual honors in the event.

Along with Barrall, Zach Liggitt had a busy afternoon as he captured first place finishes in both the shot put and discus. Liggitt recorded his personal best in the shot with a toss of 51-9.25, and he also notched a strong performance in the discus with a toss of 143.1, netting the mark on his last throw of the afternoon.

Earlier this season, Liggitt set a new school record in the discus of 159-2 at the Northampton-Nazareth meet on April 30. The previous record was held by Bryan Kadingo, who set the mark of 153.5 in 1983. Kadingo is the current chief of police in Northampton.

Jared Sebesta took a fourth place in the shot put with a toss of 45-1.75. Jared Jackson finished fourth in the 400 meter dash with a mark of 50.9, and he finished fifth in the long jump with a mark of 21.3 Nick Bodnar also took home a fourth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.8.

During the season, Hannah Flaven set a new school record in the 400 meter with a time of 58.64. She broke the previous record of 1:00.6 set by Donna (Liggitt) Purcell in 1983.

Overall, the Kids’ boys’ team finished seventh overall and the girls’ squad was 13th overall in the meet.
