Rufe aims to help Kids make long playoff run

Cole Rufe isn’t satisfied. He may never be.

However, the senior could reach some satisfaction with the Northampton baseball team this spring. He is a key member of the Konkrete Kids’ rotation that certainly will shape their season.

“I am never satisfied in what I do,” said the junior. “Whatever I do, I figure that I can do better. But I feel like I am where I should be at this point of the season. I know I just have to keep working hard.

“If I can be the leader in pitching (categories), then maybe I’ll be satisfied.”

Through his first three appearances (two starts), Rufe had a 1-0 record with a 1.44 ERA. He had 26 strikeouts and five walks in 14.2 innings.

The highlight of the year was his opening performance against Catasauqua on March 31, when he hurled a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts in a 11-1, five-inning shortened victory.

“That has to one of my best starts ever,” said Rufe. “I had pretty good control and command and my pitches were working.”

Head coach Mick Sugra has seen plenty of consistency in Rufe this season.

“Cole (Rufe) has been our most reliable pitcher so far,” said Sugra. “He is a very hard worker and has done everything we have asked of him. He goes up and beyond what is asked. I am glad to see all of his hard work is paying off.”

Pitching is a relatively new concept for him. Rufe didn’t begin pitching until the age of 11, and it became an immediate fascination with him.

“I tried it (pitching) and I liked it,” stated Rufe. “I started throwing a fastball and a change-up to my catcher who would call the signs for me.

“But once I got to high school, the coaches would call the pitches. It became more about velocity and the ability to place my pitches. It really wasn’t that big of an adjustment. Everything really came together for me.”

When he isn’t playing baseball, Rufe likes to spend time looking at trucks and cars. Still, though, his primary focus remains on baseball.

“I like to look at trucks and cars,” said Rufe. “It is a good hobby. But I really want to stay focused on baseball. We have been up and down as a team. I want to do what I can do out there to help us win.”

And Rufe can seek satisfaction in the process.
