Kids fight to stay alive

If you stroll up to Northampton’s Lisetski Field before or during a baseball game, you are likely to hear Drake or some 80s rock music blasting from the speakers.

After this past week, the K-Kids might want to change their anthem to “Stayin’ Alive” from the Bee Gees.

A five-game losing streak during the middle of the season put Northampton’s playoff hopes in peril, but victories over Liberty and Bethlehem Catholic have got the K-Kids (7-8) back on track.

Northampton defeated Becahi 13-3 behind a strong outing from pitcher Cole Rufe. The junior allowed two hits and zero runs in five innings.

Senior Kyle Morin went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Senior Brittain Shander went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Senior Seth Laky hit a solo home run.

The victory over Liberty was a big one for the confidence of the K-Kids. The Hurricanes were the No. 3 seed in District XI and the only Lehigh Valley team with a win over No. 1 Parkland this season.

Northampton jumped out to an 8-1 lead after four innings and fought off a series of late Liberty rallies. The Hurricanes scored runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but never broke open a big frame.

Senior Timmy Antigua went 3-for-4 with four RBI. Senior Zech Lambert had a perfect day at the plate after going 2-for-2 and drawing a walk.

Evan Zwolenik picked up the win after giving up two earned runs in five innings pitched.

Northampton travels to Pocono Mountain East on Friday, May 4 before a back-to-back-to-back slate against Parkland, Whitehall and Nazareth May 7-9.
