Kids’ Britton places at Beast of the East
After a big weekend of wrestling, Northampton now goes through a big week on the mats before the holiday season kicks into full swing.
Fresh off a 20th place (66.5 points) finish at the Beast of the East tournament, the Kids came home with one medalist from the event in junior Devon Britton taking an eighth place finish at 138.
Britton fell to Luke Wymer of St. Vincent-St. Mary (Ohio) by a 12-3 major decision in the seventh place bout to end his trek in Delaware.
Junior standout Julian Chlebove, who won the Beast of the East last year at 126 pounds, did not participate in the event, nor has he wrestled yet this season because of a violation of school rules, according to head coach Seth Lisa.
Without Chlebove, who would have been a favorite to find his way back on the medal stand, if not the championship bout, Lisa was still pleased with what his team was able to accomplish.
“The Beast is mentally and physically taxing on everyone,” Lisa said. “It’s a huge tournament with a good mix of talent. Our guys started slow, we lost matches we shouldn’t have. As the tournament went on, our guys hit the ground running and scored a lot of points for us during the wrestle-back rounds. All in all, a good weekend for December.”
The Kids (2-0) have themselves another tough week of wrestling ahead of them, as they hosted Bethlehem Catholic (2-0) last night and hit the road to Memorial Gymnasium tonight for a showdown with Liberty (6-0).
“Big week with Becahi and Liberty,” Lisa said. “These are two huge conference dual meets. In order to reach our goals we will need good performances from our entire team. There will be great match ups both nights. These duals will have big implications for our side of the conference.”
Lisa didn’t expect Chlebove to be on the mat for the team this week, but didn’t speculate if they would have him in the lineup next week as the Kids head back to Liberty for the Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic on Dec 28 and 29.
