Trojans rout EHS, stay unbeaten

Emmaus came into last week’s game riding high off its best performance of the season. But the Trojans were not about to let the Hornets blemish their perfect record.

Parkland capped a 10-0 regular season with a resounding win over Emmaus last week, 42-7.

“This was our goal,” said Michael Ruisch of his team’s undefeated season. “This is what we wanted. This is what we expected. I feel we deserve it.”

No team has come within less than 10 points of beating the Trojans this season, and it didn’t take long for them to gain a big lead on Emmaus.

Parkland came out throwing the ball, with quarterback Michael Ruisch completing 16 of 23 first-half passes for 289 yards. He finished the game with 355 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Ruisch hit three different receivers on a 10-play opening drive that was capped by a 1-yard Jahan Worth touchdown. He also threw a 69-yard touchdown pass to Cole Wetherhold in the first quarter and set up another one-yard Worth plunge by completing four passes to four different receivers on a second-quarter touchdown drive that put Parkland ahead 21-0 with 11:07 left in the first half.

After establishing the passing game, Parkland started feeding Worth and he eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season during the win.

“That was the game plan coming in, open up with the pass,” said Ruisch. “That opened up Jahan later in the game for the run. Him hitting 1,000 yards is a huge milestone.

“I love that. Last year we didn’t throw as much. This year they’re letting me throw and it really feels good.”

The Trojans extended their lead to 28-0 when Ruisch hit Josh Wagner for a 13-yard score with 52 seconds left in the first half.

Emmaus, which had just two first downs on its first four possessions, answered with a seven-play drive when Blake Reed hit Ben Maehrer with an 8-yard touchdown pass. But Parkland responded with

But the Trojans put the game into the mercy rule quickly in the second half. Ruisch found Tyler Hays for an 84-yard touchdown just a 1:50 in the third quarter. After an Emmaus fumble, Worth ran in from 16 yards out to put his team ahead 42-7 with 8:50 left in the third quarter.

Juan Salas (four receptions, 76 yards) was one of four Parkland receivers with 25 or more yards in the game and one of five with two or more catches.

“Before the season started [head] coach [Tim] Moncman pointed out we don’t have superstars,” said Salas. “We’re a team, a brotherhood. If the ball goes to Hays, I’m going to turn around and block someone and he does the same. That’s how a brotherhood is. It’s a team game. That’s how you win games. That’s teamwork.”

Salas was named the game’s defensive MVP by the Western Lehigh Exchange Club. Ruisch earned the award for Parkland on offense.
