Girls volleyball returns to D11 championship
The Parkland girls volleyball team made quick work of Freedom last Tuesday night in the District 11 Class 4A semifinals at Allen High School’s Sewards Gymnasium, and now they find themselves one match win away from another district championship.
The Trojans dispatched of the Patriots in straight sets, winning 25-14, 25-15, 25-15.
After No. 7 seed Freedom beat second-seeded Delaware Valley in the quarterfinals, it met a Parkland program that is seasoned and vastly experienced in the postseason.
“I thought we just came out and played our game,” said senior libero Hailey Iacobelli. “We moved around the court, communicated well, and whenever there were any hiccups, we picked each other up and moved on. We help each other out and play as a team, and that’s how we’re successful.”
Each of the first two games, both teams traded points within the 10-15 mark, but both games the Trojans went on runs to break away towards the end.
Leading 13-8 in the first set, Parkland scored the next eight points to take a commanding lead and then finish off Freedom.
Ahead 14-10 in the second set, the Trojans rattled off six straight points to climb ahead by double digits and give themselves a comfortable lead.
“We just want to keep the intensity level up and the communication level high,” Iacobelli said. “If we’re energized and always talking to each other, it’s beneficial to winning games.
“We have to work on our game and just continue to get better and grow as a team. Just focusing on one play and one point at a time is key, not to get too far ahead of ourselves. We just want to have fun.”
Senior Mia Jago finished with 11 kills, while classmate Kirah Dreisbach had six. Junior Grace Steurer and senior Mady Beaver tallied five kills. Iacobelli had eight digs and freshman Leah Brunnabend had seven. Junior setter Brooke Kratzer contributed 30 assists.
Parkland will now square off against fifth seed Nazareth in Thursday’s district final.
The Blue Eagles have won three straight games to get to this point. They beat Stroudsburg and then upset Emmaus on the same night last week. Then they took down top seed Liberty 3-2 Tuesday.
