Girls soccer reaches D11 championship

The Parkland girls kept their perfect season going with a 4-0 win over Pocono Mountain East, pushing their record to 23-0 on the season. The win, combined with Emmaus’ win over Easton, puts Parkland and Emmaus in Thursday’s District 11 Championship game.

Tori Maybruck got Parkland started just under 10 minutes into the game when she lifted a shot over Pocono Mountain East goalie Allison Bone, who came out of the goal to try to stop Maybruck’s shot.

The biggest goal of the night came with 13:41 left in the first half. Parkland was awarded a penalty kick and senior Brooke Schutter took the kick and put it into the lower corner of the net. The goal not only put the Lady Trojans up 2-0, but was the 100th goal of Schutter’s career. Schutter continues to build on her new school record for goals, breaking the previous mark of 96.

Schutter knew coming into the season that it wasn’t going to be easy to reach the 100-goal plateau since she needed 34 goals, a pretty lofty expectation, to reach the magic number. Schutter, who will be playing soccer at Duquesne University, was hoping for a big season to help her get to 100 goals and she didn’t waste her opportunity when it came around.

“My teammates helped me a lot,” said Schutter. “We didn’t know if we were going to get to 34 this season, but we’ve had a good year and my teammates set up a lot of good opportunities.”

Jenna Leonzi netted the first of her two goals late in the first half and then scored again with 11 minutes left in the game. Schutter assisted on both of Leonzi’s goals.

“Jenna and Brooke work so well together,” said coach Al Haddad. “Jenna really controlled the flank tonight and had a big game and Brooke was just Brooke. She works hard at everything that she does and I couldn’t be prouder of her.”
