Field hockey falls in district quarterfinal

Parkland field hockey headed into the District 11 quarterfinals with hopes of knocking off second-seeded Liberty on their home turf.

Unfortunately, the Lady Hurricanes had other ideas and a quick start by the Liberty offense led to a 3-0 loss for Parkland. The loss ended the Lady Trojans’ season with a 9-10-1 record overall.

Liberty took advantage of early corner opportunities to jump out to a 2-0 lead. On their first corner opportunity, Rayne Wright took the insert pass and made a quick move before firing past goalie Brie Barraco to put the Hurricanes up 1-0.

Just minutes after Wright’s goal, Sadie Abboud did the same thing on Liberty’s second corner opportunity, putting Parkland in an early hole.

“In the beginning, and across the game really, we just had a couple of defensive breakdowns in the deep part of the defense, which you can’t have that,” said Parkland head coach Lizzie Millen. “You can’t bounce back from that very easily. Because of that, we put ourselves in a hole and tried our best to come back out of it, but this was the result of it.”

The Parkland defense toughened up and kept Liberty from converting any more corners in the game, but unfortunately for Parkland, the Liberty defense was swarming and kept Parkland’s offense at bay.

Barraco made 16 saves in the game for Parkland.

“Defense is usually our strongest line,” said Millen. “I do have to say though that our midfield line really produced for us, so we were really happy to see that change.”

After last season, Parkland had to endure the loss of key seniors and the Trojans will face the same issue coming into next season.

Because of key losses, Millen will need to rework her lineup for next season. On the plus side, Millen has seen a lot of development from her younger players, so while she’s lamenting the loss of the senior class, she’s also looking forward to seeing how much further her young players develop during the offseason.

“It’s a toss-up, it’s kind of how I felt this year,” said Millen. “We lost key seniors in every line, so I didn’t know what was going to happen. It’s the same with this team and it just depends on what they do in the offseason and how committed they are.

“A lot of it right now is individual and we want them to just take some time to decompress from everything that we just went through.

“They still have to maintain their fitness and we hope that they all join indoor leagues and we’ll also have our own practice. We just want them to keep their stick on the ball as much as possible.”
