Nimeh reaches postseason

For four years Jake Nimeh was part of the regular line up on the Parkland varsity golf team.

Heading into his senior season, Nimeh had been on the cusp or reaching the district qualifier the past two years. His average was less than two strokes off the cut as a sophomore and just a half stroke from making it as a junior.

This year, playing in the No. 1 spot on the team, Nimeh played consistently well over the season and posted an 81.3 average to earn his place in the District 11 Class 3A qualifier Oct. 2 at Olde Homestead.

In his first foray into the high school golf postseason, Nimeh posted an 84 in the qualifier to make the district field.

“I was really excited,” he said. “My mom was there to watch and some of my teammates were there. I was excited to represent my school in the district tournament. I always dreamed of doing it and finally did it. I shared the moment with my teammates and then it was back to work.”

While his primary individual goal for the season was to get to districts, his major goal was helping the team get wins. The Trojans went 11-4 this fall, winning their last six matches, including wins over Eastern Pennsylvania Conference regular season champ Emmaus and EPC Tournament and District 11 champ Liberty.

“I thought we had a really good season” said Nimeh. “In our second match we played a tough course against three really good teams. After that we really came together and fired off a bunch of wins. I think we were all pleased with the way the season ended.”

Parkland picked up three of its four losses in one tri-match where it was swept by Nazareth, Central Catholic and host Northampton at Woodstone Golf Course on August 22.

While Nimeh knew he had to keep his average down all season to make the district qualifier, he was more concerned with posting good scores for his team.

“It was always in the back of my mind, but I didn’t think about it on the course,” he said of reaching districts. “The ultimate goal was always to win at the team level.”

Nimeh was the only Trojan boys player to reach the district championship, which was moved from Lehigh Country Club to Olde Homestead after rain postponed the event from a Monday, Oct. 9 to Wednesday, Oct. 11.

Having posted an 84 at that course in the qualifier, Nimeh felt ready to play another good round in the championship.

He shot 88 in district tournament to tie for 17th place. He finished nine places and six strokes off the cut to make regionals, which would have required a top-8 finish. But he was pleased with everything about his round outside of his performance on the greens.

“I played a pretty good round of golf,” said Nimeh. “I thought I played worse [in the qualifier] but the one thing that was working was the putter.”

In the championship tournament, Nimeh hit 12 fairways and 13 greens in regulation, but 34 putts were a few more than he is used to.

With his golf season behind him, Nimeh moves on to hockey season, a sport he’s been playing since fourth grade.

He plays center on the eight-time defending Lehigh Valley Scholastic Hockey League champion Parkland team. He’s contemplating where and at what level to play hockey in college as the team embarks on the 2017-18 season.
