Vogwill places 10th at districts
Mason Vogwill lived on the edge for the final two weeks of his high school golf career.
The Northwestern senior finished just two shots over the cut in a district qualifier to earn his spot in the championships. Then at last Wednesday’s District 11 Class 3A tournament, Vogwill found himself on the other side of the cut by a slim margin. He shot 82 at districts, which was held at Olde Homestead after a postponement Monday moved the event from Lehigh Country Club. He tied for ninth place and was one stroke short of moving on to the PIAA East Regional Championship.
“It’s hard,” said Vogwill before walking away from his high school’s home course for the last time as a varsity player. “There’s obviously a couple shots or putts that could have been better. Those are the ones that really matter.
“I just made the cut to get here and I did better than I did in the qualifier so I made improvement from last time, so overall it was good.”
Nine days before districts Vogwill shot 86 at the district qualifier, also held at Olde Homestead, to place tied for 14th, two strokes inside the cut (16th place) to make districts.
In the district championship tournament, Vogwill got off to a slow start and shot 45 on the front nine, including four double bogeys. But he played the back nine at 2-over par 37 get to close to a top-eight finish, which is where he needed to place to advance.
Nazareth’s Collin Seip won the Class 3A boys title with a 74, two strokes better than Pocono Mountain East’s Brett Wagner in second place. Liberty took the team title with a score of 324. Northampton (346) finished second.
Blue Mountain’s Sophie Orsulak won the girls Class 3A gold medal with a 77.
In Class 2A, William Mirams (Notre Dame East Stroudsburg) shot 3-under par 69 for the win, eight shots clear of Moravian Academy’s Bobby Beck in second place. Moravian took the Class 2A team title.
