Four Trojans earn EPC gold medals

Sam Morgan had a busy week last week.

The Parkland junior who plays two varsity sports in the spring had his lacrosse season finale last Monday when his team beat rival Emmaus, setting up another match up against the Hornets in the league playoffs on Thursday.

In between those games Morgan competed in the Eastern Pennsylvania Track and Field Championships, earning a gold medal for the 1600-meter run and a silver medal as part of a relay team.

He was one of four gold medalists for the Trojans at the meet as Grace Reed (100 hurdles), Jacob Ringer (800) and Morgan Sherwin (high jump) also took first place last Tuesday and Wednesday at East Stroudsburg South High School.

This was Morgan’s second spring playing both sports.

“My coaches are good with that, balancing time and everything,” he said. “I can’t thank them enough for that. I love lacrosse and track, too. It’s great in the spring. It’s my favorite season.”

Morgan won last week’s race in 4:24.84. He was hoping to get under 4:20, but a windy day at slowed down the entire race.

Morgan had an early lead before 3200-meter champ Seth Slavin of Pleasant Valley took the lead on the fourth lap of the eight-lap event.

“I was like ‘all right, I’m just going to stick him with him and do a little surge at the end,’” Morgan said. “I got him at the end on a final sprint.”

Grace Reed came into the 100-meter hurdles as the third seed and posted the third-best time in the preliminary heats at 16.57. The senior then put together the best race of her career to take first place in 15.83 seconds.

“I feel good,” she said of the finish. “I just kept consistent over all the hurdles because sometimes I can get a little spooked if I see someone on my side, but I just looked forward and ran my race.”

Reed said her goal was second place, but she’s upped the bar for districts and is looking for another gold this week.

She planned to keep the same focus in this week’s practices that she had last week.

“I just kept concentrating on the finish and the finish is what we worked on at practice,” Reed said. “Those last three hurdles, just sprint to the finish.”

Ringer, a junior, ran a 1:59.87 in the 800 for first place. Parkland teammate Riley Williamson finished in second place in 2:00.01.

Ringer credited his teammates with helping him become a league champ.

“My teammates push me,” Ringer said. “Riley finished second that day. He is always pushing me to do better. And of course, Sam, who is a gold medalist this year and last year, always motivates me.”

Sherwin earned first place in high by clearing 5-5, to beat Pocono Mountain East’s Kate Willshaw (5-3). Sherwin took second place at last year’s meet at 5-3 before going on to win districts at 5-5.

Many other Parkland athletes earned league medals last week with top-four finishes.

Julian Colon took second place in the 200 in 22.9. The junior also finished in third place in the 100 at 11.15.

Emily Willcox finished second in the 400 in 58.53. Connor Tempro took second place in the boys 400 at 50.85.

The boys 3200-meter relay team earned a sliver medal. That foursome included Morgan, Jacob Ringer, Jonathan Snyder and Williamson. They posted a time of 8:12.29.

Parkland’s girls 1600-meter relay also took second placewith the team of Ava Schaller, Devyn Anderson, Jasmine Adams, Christine Hutchinson. They ran the event in 4:09.77.

Christine Hutchinson finished third in 300 hurdles in 49.43. The girls 400 -meter relay team of Alexandra Fry, Willcox, Alana Marie Dee and Reed finished third in 51.36.
