Boys lacrosse beats Emmaus
The Parkland boys lacrosse team has had a lot of tough tests lately. And the Trojans have passed each with high marks.
After wins over Manheim Township and Northampton last week, Parkland kept its winning streak going with victories over Emmaus and Cumberland Valley last Thursday and Saturday, respectively. The team hasn’t lost since falling to Central Catholic on March 30.
The Trojans (12-1 overall, 8-1 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference) have now won 11 straight games including Monday’s 17-1 victory over Pleasant Valley.
“I feel like we’re at a good spot in the season,” said Parkland goal keeper James McLaughlin after the 6-4 win over Emmaus last week. “But we still have some work to do to be ready to win EPCs and districts and make a state playoff run. I feel like we have to keep practicing hard and keep the season going the way it is.”
McLaughlin had a stellar game against Emmaus last week. He stopped a pair of shots late in the opening period before his team took control of the game in the second quarter.
After a scoreless first quarter, Parkland put in the game’s first four goals in the second period.
Luke Summers scored just 49 second into the quarter before Ryan Geroulo added another with 6:55 left in the half. Andrew Albertson put his team up 3-0 just nine seconds later and Geroulo made it 4-0 with just under four minutes to go in the first half.
“It’s always is good to get the lead early,” said Geroulo. “It always gets us hyped up.
“The defense played amazing. Keeping them to zero in the first quarter really helped.”
Emmaus’ Brent Meilinger got his team on the board with 2:33 left in the second quarter and Parkland went to halftime with a 4-1 lead.
The Hornets climbed to within a goal over the first 17 minutes of the second half.
Gabriel Vansuch made it 4-2 with under five minutes left in the third period, but Summers’ second goal of the game got it back to a three-goal lead at 5-2.
Meilinger scored again to get Emmaus within two goals with five seconds left in the third quarter at 5-3.
After an Emmaus time out four minutes into the fourth quarter, Hunter Krauss scored to make it 5-4.
Parkland’s James Cippola sealed the win, scoring his team’s final goal on an assist from Ian O’Neil with 5:23 left in the game.
McLaughlin, a sophomore, and a stingy Parkland defense led by Alex Albertson held on for the win.
“Our defense was tremendous, anchored by James [McLaughlin] in goal,” said Parkland head coach Brad Schifko. “I think he had 10 saves. Alex Albertson covered one of the best players in this league in Tyler Corpora and held him pointless.
“It was just an amazing job. I could go all the way around with all of our players and coach (Joe) Labella, our defensive coordinator, put in a great game plan for tonight and our guys executed.”
Parkland followed that win with a 20-9 win over Cumberland Valley two days later.
The Trojans have five games remaining on the schedule, including a rematch with unbeaten Central Catholic on Tuesday, May 2 and the season finale against Emmaus on May 8.
