Trojans top Hornets

Everyone has days when they’re not feeling well but still have things they need to get done. That was the day that Aubree Fritzinger had on Monday.

After leaving school early to go to the doctor, she was cleared to pitch against Emmaus that afternoon. She wasn’t quite herself, but she was still good enough to give her team a complete game in a 6-2 win.

“The thing is, that we’re not the same team we’ve been,” said Parkland head coach Barry Search. “Every year it’s different. You have a different chemistry and she’s pitching her heart out, and I give her all the credit in the world for that.”

Fritzinger gave up five hits, walked one and struck out four in the game. The Hornets got two runs in the fourth inning on three hits, including a triple. At that point, Parkland’s the offense had already posted a five-run lead for Fritzinger, so the two-run stumble was no big deal.

Fritzinger also helped offensively, leading off the bottom of the first with a triple and then leading off the third with a double. In the first, Chelsea Morgan drove Fritzinger home with an RBI double. In the third, Alyssa Oakley followed Fritzinger’s double with an RBI single. The Trojans also took advantage of two passed balls in the third inning when they scored four times.

Parkland added an insurance run in the sixth when Makenzie Wolf led off with a single, was bunted to second and then scored when Oakley doubled to left, making it 6-2.

“We always pick each other up,” said Oakley. “If someone isn’t getting hits, someone else is and we pick each other up. I think honestly, we’re a very good team this year and we’re there for each other and cheering each other on.”

The top four hitters in the order – Fritzinger, Oakley, Morgan and Shauna Frank – were a combined 6-for-13 with five runs scored and four runs driven in.

“We’ve been fortunate over the years to be able to bat the lineup where the bottom of our lineup is as potent as the top and that’s our goal this year,” said Search. “We’ve been just finding our groove and that’s the thing, there’s no team in the league that has a particular advantage because the weather has been tough for everybody. We’re just working at it and hopefully we get better.”

A day after beating Emmaus 6-2, the Lady Trojans were back to work and beat Northampton by an identical 6-2 score. Fritzinger again threw a complete game, giving up seven hits and striking out eight batters. Morgan finished the game with three hits for Parkland, with both Wolf and Steph Herpel driving in two runs. The back-to-back wins puts Parkland at 4-0 in the EPC and 6-0 overall on the season.

Parkland hosts Liberty (2-1, 3-1) Thursday and is then off until Tuesday when it plays Central Catholic (0-4, 2-4).

“I think we’re a work in progress and that’s what we looked at early in the year, that this team is going to be a work in progress and we have a lot to work on,” Search said. “The players are receptive and they do their thing and it works out pretty well for us that way.”
