Trojans compete in state swimming

Five Parkland athletes competed in last weekend’s PIAA Swimming Championships at Bucknell University, while two Trojan divers will participate in this week’s state diving championships in Lewisburg.

Parkland’s Matthew Ceh swam in a pair of events at the state championships. Ceh, a junior, made the consolation finals of the 50 freestyle, taking 14th place overall with a time of 21.30. Ceh also competed in the 100 freestyle at states, taking 28th place in 48.02 seconds.

Teammate Zoe Sheridan also competed in two events for Parkland. Sheridan, a junior, swam to a 27th-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:56.28. She also swam the 500 freestyle, finishing in 28th place with a time of 5:13.79.

Megan Sicinski made her third trip to states in three years of high school swimming. The junior placed 20th in the 100-yard breaststroke last weekend with a time of 1:05.62.

Trojan senior Mathew Engler capped his high school career on the biggest stage in Pennsylvania high school swimming. Engler took 28th place in the 100 butterfly at Bucknell with a time of 52.30.

Junior James Connolly finished 27th at states in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.82.

Two more Parkland athletes will compete in this weekend’s diving state championships.

Freshmen Lexi Lehman and Alexa Brinker will compete in Sunday’s diving championships. The event, which is usually held in between preliminary and final swimming sessions, was pushed back to this weekend because of last week’s snowstorm.

CORRECTIONS

Last week’s Parkland Press story previewing the state meet contained some inaccurate information and quotes.

Last week’s story indicated that three boys and three girls from Parkland qualified for the state swim meet. The correct number is three boys and four girls.

The story incorrectly reported that junior Megan Sicinski was not at states last season. That was not accurate. Sicinski was making her third straight appearance at the state meet.

Sicinski swam on state-qualifying medley relay teams as a freshman and sophomore. She also swam in the 100 breaststroke at states the past two seasons, as a sophomore and junior, respectively

The story failed to report that Matthew Ceh qualified for the state meet in the 50-yard freestyle. As noted above, Ceh swam two events at states, including the 50 free.

Last week’s story also misidentified quotes from Parkland swimmers. The quotes belonged to other swimmers, not those who they were attributed to in the story. The Press apologizes for the errors.
