Ortman marches to semifinals

Day two of the PIAA 3A wrestling championships saw seven of our local wrestlers advance to Saturday’s semifinal round.

Parkland’s Zach Ortman (138) is the most surprising semifinalist of the group, as he registered an overtime fall over Hollidaysburg’s Nathan Swartz in 6:46 during Friday’s quarterfinal round to advance in dramatic fashion.

Next up for Ortman will be a rematch with Northampton’s Dan Moran, who won an ultimate tie-breaker bout over Upper Darby’s Colin Cronin 6-5. With Nazareth’s Sammy Sasso also advancing to the 138-pound semifinals, it gives District 11 three of the four participants, as Sasso has defeated Moran in the district and Northeast Regional finals, while Ortman hasn’t been able to top Moran in each of the past two weeks.

Bethlehem Catholic’s Mikey Labriola (170) and Northampton’s Julian Chlebove (120) continue their quests for back-to-back state titles, as Labriola won a physical 14-8 bout over Greensburg-Salem’s Alec Shaw and Chlebove continued his clean sheet in the tournament, posting a 6-0 decision over Canon-McMillan’s Logan Macri.

Liberty’s Luke Werner (120) is hoping for another finals date with Chlebove, as his torrid start to the tournament continued with a 15-6 major decision over Hempfield’s Vincent Distefanis. Werner has won both of his first two bouts via bonus points.

Becahi’s Ryan Anderson (126) and Niko Camacho (HWT) are also in Saturday’s semifinals, as Anderson has the tough task of taking on Franklin Regional’s Spencer Lee, who owns a career-record of 143-0 and is vying to become the 13th four-time state champion in PIAA history.

Other Hawks that guaranteed themselves a medal include: Kenny Herrmann (113); Zach Glenn (120); and Jarred Papcsy (132).

Northampton’s KJ Fenstermacher (132) and Cade Moisey (170) will also bring home hardware.

Freedom’s duo of Ryan Deloach (182) and Evan Callahan (220) were eliminated Friday.
