Lehman wins EPC diving title

As they did in the previous Eastern Pennsylvania Conference midseason diving meet last month, Parkland’s girl divers swept the top four spots in the final standings last weekend at the postseason EPC Diving Championships.

Lexi Lehman, who finished second to Alexa Brinker in the January meet, took the top spot this time, followed by Kaitlyn Smykowski, Kate Gottwald and Serena Johnson. Brinker didn’t compete in the most recent event, and was replaced by Smykowski. Gottwald and Johnson finished third and fourth, respectively, last month.

Lehman finished with a score of 445.25, besting her score of 417.55 from last month, while Gottwald did the same, going from a 405.95 to a 419.70 in Saturday’s meet. The girls diving contingent finished with a combined score of 1682.90, beating their January mark of 1641.75 in EPC Diving.

Lehman and Gottwald are both freshmen, while Smykowski is a junior and Johnson is in her senior season. Johnson qualified for states last season and finished 16th in the PIAA competition at Bucknell.

On the boys side, Chris Lehman finished third, behind Nazareth’s Steven Stasolla and Emmaus’ Andrew Vanim. Kole Cannon finished fifth, with Jon Hansell sixth and Devin Cahill ninth. Lehman finished just over nine points out of second place and trailed Stasolla, who also won the event in January, by just over 21 points.

Lehman finished fourth in the previous EPC meet and bested his score of 432.25, moving to 477.20 in Saturday’s competition. Cannon went from a score of 393.65 to 422.40 in the most recent event, but placed fifth in both events. Hansell didn’t compete in the January diving event.

The four boys divers moved from a combined score of 1358.85 to a total of 1630.95 in Saturday’s event.

Lehman is in his senior season and finished 13th in states last season in the finals at Bucknell University. Hansel, is also a senior, while Cahill is a junior and Cannon is a freshman for Parkland.

Parkland swimming and diving hosts Emmaus Thursday afternoon in the annual rivalry meet, with the boys and girls teams of both schools coming into the event undefeated in the EPC, meaning that the meet won’t just be for bragging rights, but also for the EPC Championship.
