Trojans go 3-2 in dual tourney

Last week was a busy week for the Parkland wrestling team.

The Trojans faced two of the best teams in the area, taking on Northampton last Wednesday and Bethlehem Catholic last Thursday before hosting the annual Parkland Duals on Saturday.

Parkland went 0-2 in the two Eastern Pennsylvania Conference matches before a 3-2 showing Saturday at the tournament.

The Trojans picked up wins over Delaware Valley, St. Anthony’s (NJ) and Souderton, but fell to Council Rock South and Exeter, which edged the Trojans 37-36 to close out the day.

“Obviously the last match was a big one,” said Parkland head coach Ryan Nunamaker. “With where we are and what we have in our lineup, I thought if we can go 4-1 that would be a good day for us. I knew Council Rock was strong and has a lot of depth on their team this year. I knew Exeter would be tough too, I just thought that would be the one maybe we matched up better with. To come through and come up one point short is tough.

“I thought our kids did everything that we needed to give ourselves a chance to win. In the end we just gave up too many bonus points.”

Frank Guida had a big day at the tournament, going 5-0 with four pins and a major decision. Lucas Kern went 4-1 for Parkland with one pin. Blake Shalbert won four matches, two by fall.

“I thought we wrestled pretty well,” said Guida. “We beat the teams we were supposed to beat and lost to the teams we were supposed to lose to.”

The Trojans are 7-4 overall this season and 4-2 in EPC matches.

Parkland has had some solid showings at tournament this year, including a second-place finish at the Penn Manor Tournament where Guida and Nate Feyrere both earned first place in their weight class, leading a list of Trojan place winners that includes Zach Ortman (third place), Shalbert (third), Kevin Vrablik (fifth), Ethan Moscat (sixth), Adam Lizak (seventh) and Kern (eighth).

The Trojans also competed against some of the best wrestlers in the northeast over the holidays at the Powerade Tournament at Cannon McMillan High School in Cannonsburg. Parkland tied for 24th place out of 48 teams from nine states, including one team that traveled from California.

Ortman earned fifth place at the Powerade Tournament, beating Imram Heard of St. Paul’s (MD) in the 138-pound fifth-place match. Guida took sixth place, falling to Colbey Harlan of Oakdale (CA) in the 182-pound fifth-place match. Feyrer finished eighth at the tournament, falling 3-2 by tiebreaker in the seventh-place bout against Tyler Cook of Brookville.

Parkland will be back on the mat this weekend at Council Rock South’s Escape the Rock Tournament. They get back into league matches Tuesday when they host Emmaus.

While the Trojans are on pace to earn a spot in the district duals tournament next month, with teams like Bethlehem Catholic and Nazareth in their district, the road to states will be a difficult one for Parkland.

“It’s going to be tough for our team,” said Guida. “The No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the state are in our best district and only two teams get out, so it’s going to be tough. If we wrestle our best matches anything can happen.”

“Our team is doing very well,” said Kern, a freshman. “They’re pushing each other in the room and we’re just going to keep working harder.”
