Boys harriers earn gold at leagues
After a dominant regular season, the Parkland boys cross country team kept up its torrid pace this season with a convincing win at last week’s Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Championship Meet.
The Trojans placed their top five runners within the top 14 finishers to crush the competition, out-scoring second-place Easton 32-74.
The Parkland boys placed two runners in the top five and four in the top 10 overall.
“I’m very happy with our team finish as well as myself,” said senior Hailemichael Geiger. “I’m very proud of my team. We worked hard and we’re smart runners.”
Geiger finished second overall in 17:01.62. Pleasant Valley’s Seth Slavin won the boys individual title in 16:27.94.
The rest of the Trojans’ top five included Sam Morgan (third), Nicholas Bower (fifth), Riley Williamson (8th) and Steven Kaleycik (14th). Other Parkland boys runners at the league meet were Jacob Ringer (19th), Jonathan Snyder (20th), Matthew Zager (22nd), Zachary Lynch (23rd), Nathan Rode (24th).
Kaleycik, one of just two seniors in Parkland’s top five at leagues, has been part of the past two league championship teams and has been a three-year varsity runner for the team.
He was hoping for a better individual performance, but still enjoyed the team title.
“It wasn’t my best race,” said Kaleycik. “I kind of went a little too fast in the beginning. I kind of over-thought. I think the heat was a factor as well.
“I’m really happy (about the team title). That was one of my goals for the season, to win a league title and hopefully win a district title next week. It feels really good because we worked really hard this year. We know how to work together. That’s something I noticed this whole season.”
Parkland’s girls team took third place at leagues, led by Sydney DelVecchio’s 12th-place finish. She was followed by teammates Madison Zaun (19th), Erin Wood (29th), Morgan Glenn (36th) and Ashley Steele (40th) to round out the top five.
The Trojan girls team finished behind Stroudsburg (31) and Easton (94). The Mountaineers had the top three finishers in the race.
The rest of Parkland girls finishers included Kiley Krasley (43rd), Claire Bassler (48th), Natalie Britton (58th), Lily Goense (72nd) and Haley Crable (77th).
The Trojans competed in Wednesday’s District 11 Championship Meet, which took place after Press deadlines. For coverage of districts see next week’s Press.
