Trojans bounce back with win over PME
In a week 7 loss to Bethlehem Catholic, the bread and butter of the Parkland offense could not get going. The run game was held in check for most of the night, and the Trojans were held to just seven points offensively, a touchdown pass by Michael Ruisch to Conner Bernecker.
But last weekend against Pocono Mountain East, Parkland (6-2 overall) found its rushing attack once again. Five different Trojan tailbacks found the end zone in a 45-0 shutout win on homecoming at Parkland School District Stadium.
“After that loss, we (running backs) took it to heart,” said Parkland senior Nick Suriel. “We knew we had to come back and just show that we can still score offensively. Last week we only scored seven points. That’s not enough. This game shows that we can move the ball down the field whenever we want.”
Junior back Jahan Worth had similar feelings on the offensive outburst.
“It felt amazing just looking at that scoreboard and seeing 45-0,” Worth said. “Both sides of the ball came to play tonight. We have so much depth with our running backs. Everybody works in and contributes. Everyone is doing well, and it all starts at practice.”
Worth and Suriel, along with senior Frank Guida, Joe Guida, and Josh Wagner all scored on the night.
“It’s a testament to all of the hard work that each guy puts in at practice,” said Worth. “Those guys are working against our starting defense and getting stronger each day. It’s great to see everyone get out there and show what they have, and it can help us down the road with the depth we have.”
It may not have been a marquee matchup as the previous five weeks, but Parkland came to play and clicked on all cylinders, looking to dust away the rust from the previous game.
After the teams traded punts on their first possessions, the Trojans had a nine-play drive that ended in a 1-yard touchdown run by Worth (37 yards rushing).
Brian Hanton connected on a 25-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter is where Parkland put the game away, and was able to rest some of their players after a rough five-game stretch.
Frank Guida (49 yards rushing) tallied two touchdowns on the first two drives in under a four-minute span on his only two carries of the game.
Joe Guida (48 yards rushing) added a 23-yard score on his first touch, and Suriel (89 yards rushing) scored from 12 yards away on the next possession, and the Trojans led 38-0 going into the half.
“It’s been a while since I got into the end zone,” said Suriel. “It felt really good. I know the offensive line has been working really hard. They told me in every huddle that they were going to get me in the end zone, and it just felt great.”
Midway through the fourth quarter, they added one via a Josh Wagner five-yard touchdown run, his first of the season.
“It shows our other guys that they’re not just practicing for no reason,” Suriel said. “They will get rewarded no matter what.”
Parkland will host Northampton (0-8) Friday night to end the regular season.
