Boys soccer falls to Mounties in semi

The Parkland boys soccer team opened its postseason with a win over Northampton in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference quarterfinals. But the Trojans suffered an early exit from the tournament when No. 3 seed Stroudsburg pulled out a 2-1 overtime win over the Trojans Tuesday at Pleasant Valley High School.

Parkland fell behind 1-0 in the first half, but Josh Kiser tied the game in the 72nd minute to force overtime.

“I think the effort was great,” said Parkland head coach Patrick Birns. “The first half wasn’t so good. The second half we did a good job moving the ball and creating some opportunities. We knew they were good on the counter. We scored on ourselves for the first goal. I felt like we really controlled the play in what we wanted to do. We just didn’t finish our opportunities.”

Parkland out-shot the Mountaineers 6-5 in the game, but the Trojans had a few more opportunities that those numbers reflect.

Stroudsburg went ahead on a goal off a free kick with 17:31 left in the first half. The free kick was sent in from of the goal by Stroudsburg’s Adam Malec. It sailed in front of the goal. It bounced off of a Parkland player and into the net.

Kiser tied the game when he took a through ball from Dawson Berger and buried it to tied the game with 8:51 left.

The Trojans maintained possession for most of the overtime period, but the Mounties made their only chance count in with 54 seconds left in the overtime.

“I thought we did a good job coming back and tying it up,” said Birns. “The ball was down in their end for overtime and we were pressing and pressing. I’m happy with what they did.”

Parkland (15-2-2 overall, 14-0-2 EPC) was the No. 2 seed in the EPC playoffs. The Trojans opened the tournament with a 4-0 win over Northampton Saturday. Owen Iacobelli, Conley Hochstetler, Berger and Andrew Luchansky scored goals in that game, with assists going to Berger and Kiser.

Parkland will move on to next week’s District 11 Class 4A tournament where it will be the No. 2 seed behind the winner of the EPC championship game.
