Girls volleyball reaches milestone

When the ball hit the court and the final point was scored, the Parkland girls volleyball team swept Dieruff in three straight games, 25-6, 25-9 and 25-13 to move to 2-0 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.

But last Thursday night’s victory over the Huskies was an even bigger win for the program. The Trojans reached a milestone of 100 consecutive league match wins, dating back to the 2009 season. It has been a long time since Parkland last lost in the conference, it took head coach Mike Krause a few minutes to think of who was in his senior class when the streak started.

“You have to give me a minute to think about this,” Krause said. “We have had such a great tradition here, and have had a lot of great players in our program. Each year has been so special. It’s great that these kids this year were able to reach this milestone and celebrate it for all of the past years.”

Krause’s teams have won three state titles in the last five years, and were the state runner-up in one of the other years. They have featured multiple All-Americans, All-Stater players, and Division I collegiate athletes. But Krause has been around the game a long time, and his coaching knowledge has helped these teams get to where they are, especially this 2016 team.

“We lost a lot of great players last year,” said senior Sam Graver. “They really taught us a lot and it’s great to be able to keep the program’s tradition of winning going, and accomplish 100 straight wins.”

There are four seniors this year, Graver, Morgan Sherwin, Megan Shaw and Paige Konsko. They may not have the well-known Parkland volleyball names of Krause or Robertson, but the 2016 Trojans are just as hungry to win, and have shown it, winning their first two games of the season, followed by a championship last weekend at the Garden Spot Invitational. They are once again ranked No. 1 in the state.

“I think it says something about the preparation at practice,” said Krause. “It leads over into competition, and we have pride in our senior leadership. They make sure the team works hard and is prepared for every game. That says a lot.”

It’s still early in the season, but to get this milestone out of the way and out of the minds of everyone involved within the program may be a blessing. So far, the undefeated Trojans haven’t had any distractions or upsets to deal with.

“I’m pleasantly surprised with how far this team has come since the beginning of preseason camp,” said Graver. “We were a little shaky at first with a lot of us being new to the varsity experience, but we became more and more confident each day. Everyone is working so hard.”

Parkland began this week with a win at Easton Monday, and then have games against Pleasant Valley and Pocono Mountain West, before hosting a tournament on the weekend.

“We just have to take the next few weeks game-by-game, and not be too over-enthusiastic about this milestone,” Graver said. “We can lose on any given night, and need to bring the same intensity to each game.”
