Boys have a solid summer
Northampton head boys basketball coach Coy Stampone believes a major part of his upcoming season might have been already implemented.
A short and busy stay at the Albright College team camp could have accomplished the goal.
“We’ve had a good summer,” said Stampone, who will enter his fourth season at the helm this winter. “We have been playing really well together. I really think we came together at Albright.
“We built some chemistry there and that was a key. All we did was eat, sleep, and play basketball.”
The Konkrete Kids posted an impressive 6-2 record at the camp, as they split the 14-player entourage into two teams. Along with the camp, the Konkrete Kids also have been competitive in the Allentown Summer League.
“In the Allentown League, we have seen the same teams that we play during the season,” added Stampone. “We had a really good game against Allen lately that we lost by two points. But we have been playing well in the league.
“It is a good test for us in the league.”
Whitehall went on to beat Allen in the finals of the league last week.
The Kids did lose five seniors from last year’s 10-12 squad, but they do return incoming seniors Morgan Heffelfinger and Tanner Hahn. They also have regained the services of former freshman sensation Aidan Elwood, who returned to Northampton after spending last year at Allentown Central Catholic. However, Elwood has spent most of the summer playing with his AAU team.
Stampone also expects Mike Torres, Jahmari Austin, and Joe Tossi, all of whom played JV last season, to gain plenty of meaningful minutes this winter. Mohamed Diakite, who joined the Kids’ program after a transfer from New York City, is in the process of applying to play this winter. Stampone stated a decision likely would be made at the start of the school year.
Nick Filchner, whose father Duane is the program’s all-time leading scorer, will be an incoming freshman, and he should be a factor in the offense.
The Kids concluded their summer play with action in the Stellar Tournament and at SportsFest.
“We have some people back, but we’ll have a different look,” stated Stampone. “We want to be able to take something from this summer and we know we can compete against anyone.”
