LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Lehigh Township: Historical society plans Aug. 6 event

You are invited to visit St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Indianland, 787 Almond Road, Walnutport, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 6 to celebrate the Pennsylvania Dutch heritage and the church’s schoolhouse.

Lehigh Township Historical Society is proud of St. Paul’s Schoolhouse. The 1865 one-room schoolhouse was restored by the society and opened as a museum in July of 2010. Stop by and see the restored building with all of the related school memorabilia inside. Many of the area’s one- and two-room schoolhouses were either converted into homes or have deteriorated. Thanks to the society, St. Paul’s Schoolhouse is in excellent condition.

A special musical program by Fritz and Belva Williams, Palmerton, will be held in the fellowship hall 2 p.m. They will play various musical instruments, including alto, tenor and soprano recorders, harmonica, ocarina, harp, guitar and more. You also will hear different styles of music from other countries. One special number will be the Pennsylvanian Dutch lullaby “Schlof, Bubeli, Schlof.” All ages will enjoy this program.

Children will be able to color pictures in the church hall and take them home.

While in the hall, check out the display pinpointing former locations of schoolhouses in Lehigh Township.

If you are Pennsylvania Dutch and enjoy good food, you will be pleased with the refreshments: shoo-fly pie and sugar cookies with various beverages. I hope many residents will come out and “kibitz.”

If you have any stories about your schoolhouse days or anecdotes you would like to pass on, or if you would like further information on this event, contact Brenda at the historical society at 610-440-0151.
