Kids take Stellar exit in stride

If there was one thing consistent with Northampton’s performance at the Stellar Basketball Showcase last weekend, it was that the K-Kids didn’t have their full lineup again.

Just like has been the case all summer, Northampton played with what they had over the course of three games and went 1-2 during their stint.

The Kids defeated Boyertown 63-49 in their Stellar, but then dropped a 64-55 contest to a seeded Allen team before getting eliminated by Shenandoah Valley 53-52 in overtime Saturday.

“I think the big thing that we took out of the tournament was that we can compete with anyone,” said head coach Coy Stampone. “We haven’t played a game this summer with our full lineup yet, so we had guys in different positions every game.”

One position the Kids were in during Friday’s contest with Allen was the spotlight, as a packed house took in the action to see Talek Williams and Tyrese Martin put on a dunking display for the Canaries en route to victory.

It was the type of environment that all coaches want their players to experience in the summer.

“It was a great atmosphere and we were right there with them throughout the game,” Stampone said. “We were down five with three minutes left and couldn’t really take advantage of some of our possessions down the stretch, but again, we showed that we could compete with one of the best teams.”

The focus now shifts to this weekend’s SportsFest tournament at Cedar Beach where the Kids open play on Thursday at 6pm against Faith Christian. The Kids are in a pool of four teams and will look to advance out of the pool with the top spot or as one of the four wild card teams from the 48 team tournament, as 16 teams make the knockout stage.

The Kids pool also includes Wilson (Saturday at 9am) and Pocono Mountain West (Saturday at noon), who were crowned Stellar champions last week.

“We have to get better in certain areas of play like being able to defend penetration,” Stampone said, “but we’ve done a good job rebounding and we’re a pretty good three-point shooting team. If we can spread the floor and hit shots, we’ll be in good position.”
