Lehigh Valley won two out of three games on Monday, the first day of the Carpenter Cup Softball Classic at FDR Park in Philadelphia.
Northampton softball players, Jillian Muthard and Hallie Muffley are in their second year on the tournament team.
“We’re hitting very well, and our pitching is very strong,” Muthard said, regarding the team.
Lehigh Valley defeated Delaware North 9-3 in its first game of the day.
Muffley walked three times and scored three runs in the Lehigh Valley victory, while Muthard shared pitching duties with Whitehall’s Kay Solderitch and Ashlee Brosky.
Lehigh Valley’s second game ended in a 7-4 victory over Olympic Colonial.
Muthard had an RBI single up the middle. The Northampton pitcher also went in the game to relieve with a one out and bases loaded situation.
“I felt pretty good [pitching that day], but a pitcher has to be ready at any time, and I had to come in and get the job done,” said Muthard. “They ended up scoring one more, but I pitched earlier in the day, so I was ready.”
Despite the Lehigh Valley’s 7-6 loss to Philadelphia Catholic in the third game, Muthard believes that Olympic Colonial was the tougher team.
“We’ll start to play even better as we face better teams,” she said.
The double-elimination tournament was scheduled to resume on June 22 and end on June 23.
