Northampton’s NorCo Legion roster is a familiar one for fans of the K-Kid faithful.

If you followed the high school team during the spring, it’s fair to say that this summer’s group mirrors many of the players that took the field, as Mike Bodnar’s group returns 11 players from last year’s team that won the East Division en route to a 10-8 regular season finish before falling to Roseto in three games in the opening round of the playoffs.

Northampton is off to a 2-1 start to the season, posting a 2-1 win over the Wanderers and a 7-3 victory over Nazareth this week. Their only blemish this season came in a 7-0 defeat to Wilson, but Bodnar is confident that this team can at least equal or improve upon last year’s finish.

“I think the goal every year for us is to get to the playoffs and see what happens from there,” he said. “We pretty much have most of our team back from a year ago and these guys are a year older and more experienced.”

Some of the mainstays that Bodnar will rely upon are Ian Csencsits (2B), Shane Aster (OF), Mike Bodnar (OF), Mike Kovalchik (OF), Ian Luberti (1B) and Will Stackhouse (3B).

Justin Bragg and Nick DeMieri are two of the top pitchers in the rotation for Northampton this summer.

After getting bounced from the District 11 playoffs by Liberty in 10-run fashion, Bodnar senses this team has something to prove this summer.

“They know they can be a lot better than what they showed this year,” he said. “I think they want to make up for that last game and I think they realize this is going to be the last time a lot of them play baseball together.”

Northampton has a slow week on hand with only a home contest against Wind Gap (0-2-1) on Thursday before tuning up for five games next week, just in time for Bodnar to lose five players to senior week.

“It happens every year,” he said about short numbers this time of the season. “It’ll be a scramble, but we’ll manage it.”
