Softball will play for D-11 championship

The powerful offense of the Lady Trojans softball team continued to roll Tuesday with a 12-3 win over Easton in the District 11 semifinals, played at Patriot’s Park in Allentown. The win came after a 16-1 dismantling of Pocono Mountain East in the quarterfinals last week.

After falling behind the Cardinals 1-0 in the top of the first, Parkland methodically went to work, collecting five runs in the bottom of the inning and adding 11 more in the third to end the game on the 15-run mercy rule. Shauna Frank finished the game 4-for-4, falling just a home run short of hitting for the cycle in the win.

“I know my teammates are always there to back me up,” said Frank after the win. “We’ve just been clicking lately and if one person doesn’t do it, the others do and there’s no worrying about who does what to help the team.”

In both games, Aubree Fritzinger got the win for Parkland and collected an RBI in each of the wins. She also scored five runs in the two games, helping to play her part for the offense. Between the powerful offense and Fritzinger’s pitching, Parkland is in strong pursuit of defending its Class 4A state title from last season.

“We always know that Aubree is going to keep us in the game and it makes it easier to relax and just play hard,” said Frank. “We know that if we make a mistake, it’s not going to kill us because she’ll bounce back and we have such a strong offense that we can help her out.”

In the win over Easton, Chelsea Morgan finished the day 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Every player in Parkland’s starting lineup had at least one hit, with the top five batters in the order each collecting at least two. Kyleigh Staudt homered for Parkland in the bottom of the third to put the Lady Trojans up 6-2 over the Red Rovers.

“These girls have worked really hard for us,” said coach Barry Search. “It seems like each day they get more and more determined.”

The win over Easton puts the Trojans (21-3) back in the District 11 finals against Whitehall, who they have already played three times this season, beating them in each of the last two games, including a 7-5 win in the league playoffs.

Parkland’s regular season loss to the Zephyrs was the first of back-to-back losses that the Trojans suffered, which helped to kick start their season and push them into what has now become an 11-game win streak.

“I think we just weren’t all together back then,” said Frank. “It was just one of those things, but we didn’t get upset about it or panic, but we just came together and started focusing on what we had to do to win. Nobody was pointing fingers or getting down. It was just one of those things.”

Whitehall beat Freedom 5-3 in the other district semifinal game to earn their spot in the championship. Freedom, handed Parkland its first loss during the regular season, which marked the first time the Lady Trojans had lost a league game since 2013. Parkland players aren’t looking for revenge at this point in the season, preferring instead to just focus on the next opponent, whoever it may be.

The matchup with Whitehall (19-5) comes Thursday at 7 p.m. at Patriot’s Park in Allentown. With a win, the Lady Trojans would again reach the PIAA tournament, which begins Monday. The District 11 Champion will play the third place team from District 1 in the opening round game.
