More gold for Blount

Northampton track and field thrower, Aja Blount, won the gold medal in discus at the District XI Class AAA Track and Field Championships last week at Whitehall High School.

“It’s very overwhelming, but I’m overwhelmed with joy,” Blount said. “It’s very exciting. We were kind of stressed, but stressed for Meghan.”

Blount’s teammate, Meghan Hemingway, clinched a silver medal in the same event.

“Yes, especially because I came in at ninth, but I PR’ed today too,” said Hemingway. “I’m a senior, so I just thought I have nothing to lose. We knew Aja was going to states because she qualified before, so it was nice to do this with her.”

Blount’s throw was 119-07.00, and Hemingway’s was 105-06.00.

“I was definitely way more confident today because I won last week, and I was consistent at practice,” Blount said.

Northampton sprinter, Colton Maxwell, won a bronze medal in the 400 meter with a time of 51.34.

“It feels good, and I PR’ed today,” said Maxwell. “I definitely knew I had a good chance. I had a slightly different plan to come out fast and run my own race.”

Tatiana Lopez won a fourth place medal in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.53.

“I did way better than I thought I was going to do,” Lopez said. “I was pretty close with Parkland, but she tripped, and it kind of messed me up, and I passed her. I just had to be focused and not worry about anyone else’s time.”

Lopez’s coach is Bill Gillespie.

“After seeing what she did in prelims, I thought she had a good shot,” he said. “She had a consistent three-step and a nice start today. The field was really open this year. She came on so strong and did her best.”

Alexis Barrall also won a fourth place medal in the pole vault with a jump of 9-00.00, and Bryan Morris placed fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 42-11.00.

Blount and Hemingway will compete at the PIAA State Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University.
