Volleyball set for another big year

The Parkland boys volleyball team went as far as any team could last year, and won more games than any other team in program history has.

When the Trojans knocked off District 7 champ Fox Chapel 3-1 in the state title match, Parkland capped a perfect season at 24-0.

And with a majority of that team returning, the Trojans have their eyes set on repeating.

“We’re returning the majority of last year’s team,” said head coach Scott Trumbauer. “This year’s roster has a lot of big-game experience to lean on. Almost everyone played in the offseason so we are looking to get back into the swing of things as quickly as possible as we prepare for a tough schedule.”

There are eight seniors back that played a role in that undefeated season a year ago, and Trumbauer can rely on plenty of upperclassmen in big games this season.

Ohio State-bound Andrew Hillman (setter), Kyle Stout (opposite hitter), Jack Dreisbach (middle hitter), Jared Silverstein (Libero), Jake Heyer (middle hitter), Andrew Micheletti (setter), Bryce Galloway (outside hitter) and Andrew Fine (opposite hitter) bring an array of talent back.

Juniors Garrett Weigel (outside hitter), Sam Iorio (middle hitter) and Michael Zeky (setter) will be key newcomers that Trumbauer will look to for contributions.

“We’re looking for these guys to help fill the openings left by graduation,” Trumbauer said. “We lost 4 seniors, but each of them served a very specific role on the team. Every team is faced with this issue. We just have to adjust and learn how this year’s team will handle the changes.”

Parkland will have plenty of tests to get them ready for their main goals, and they will happen early in the season.

The Trojans will travel to North Allegheny for a tournament the first weekend of the season and will host PIAA Class AA champ Northeastern High School (April 30) and perennial state powerhouse Pennridge (April 8).

The Trojans start their Eastern Pennsylvania Conference schedule when they host Nazareth March 29.
