Swimmers head to state championships

The PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships are set for this week at Bucknell University. Parkland will have three divers, five swimmers and one relay competing at the meet.

This year’s event may necessitate the need for a bigger display case for trophies and medals at the Salvaggio household. Senior Siena Salvaggio looks to repeat her gold medal performances in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events from last year. Of course, there’s also her silver medals from the 2014 championships where she came up just short of gold in the two events. Add to that trophies for the Dennis McGinley Award from District 11, a trophy for the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Swimmer of the Year, medals from four team conference championships and four team district championships and you’ve got quite a collection.

Salvaggio also needs a room for the other gold medal she won in volleyball, including a state championship last fall.

“It’s been amazing,” said Salvaggio. “You dream of being able to accomplish these things, but there are certainly no guarantees, and you have to really enjoy them when they come.”

Salvaggio has the fastest qualifying times for both the 50 and 100 freestyle this year.

Parkland senior Tori Connolly, who put on an impressive display in districts, has the ninth-fastest time for the 500-yard freestyle and the 14th-fastest time in the 200-yard freestyle event.

Underclassmen are well represented by freshman Allie Lin, who will compete in both the 200-yard individual medley, where she has the 12th-best time, and the 100-yard breaststroke, where she has the 19th-best time. Sophomore Megan Sicinski has the 28th-best time in the 100 breaststroke and lone boys representative Matt Ceh has the 22nd-best time in the boys 50-yard freestyle.

“It’s going to be exciting,” said Lin. “It’s really a dream come true to go to states, especially in my first year.”

“Siena and Tori have been through all of this before and they know what to expect and know what type of competition they face,” said coach Rob Robitaille. “For the younger swimmers, it’s all going to be a learning experience and something they’ll remember for the rest of their lives. It will also help down the road, because hopefully, this won’t be their last trip to Bucknell, so they can get all the nerves out this time.”

Senior Kira Karopoulos joins Salvaggio, Sicinski and Lin in the 200-yard medley event. The team has the 13th-best qualifying time for the meet at Bucknell.

In diving, junior Chris Lehman is seeded 18th in the boy’s event, while junior Serena Johnson is 19th on the girls side. Kelsey German, a sophomore, is the highest seeded diver for Parkland, coming in 17th on the girls side.
