Stout emerges as scorer in sr. year

Kyle Stout’s senior year has been written like a script from a fairytale book.

The senior has had a successful basketball season individually and as a part of the Trojans team. He is a part of a program that has won four consecutive district championships and two straight league titles.

And, surprisingly enough, Stout could see at a young age that he could potentially be a part of something special when he became a high school player.

“I played for Schnecksville with Jack [Dreisbach] when we were younger,” Stout said. “Noel [Brouse] was on our team and a couple of other kids, so we grew up together. We had a good team. It was always us and Emmaus that were winning. And then playing against Sam [Iorio] and Devante [Cross], I knew the talent we were going to have at the high school level.”

Stout has been a member of the varsity team for three years, and a starter the last two. He has scored 920 points in his career, more than half (518) have come this season.

Stout was always one of the more athletic players in District 11, a 6-foot-6 wing that has range, can dribble by players and soar above the rim for crowd-pleasing dunks. But in 2015-16, he became a go-to scorer for a loaded Trojans team.

“I know that even if I am having an off-night, there are four or five other guys that can step up and score,” said Stout. “We have a lot of depth and talent on this team, and that really helps us.”

On a team with a 1,000-point scorer in Sam Iorio, Stout has worked to find his shots. He has gone from 11.6 points per game a year ago, to 17.9 per game this season. And the league took notice this year; he was named the EPC’s MVP.

“It was a great honor for me,” said Stout. “But my teammates really stepped up and played well all year. They found me for a lot of my shots. We had two other guys (Iorio and Cross) that made all-league, so it’s a testament to our team.”

Stout credited his play this year to the work of his trainer Sam Barona, who has worked to keep him strong and healthy on the court. They have been working together since Stout was an eighth grader.

Stout will continue his academic and athletic career next year at Lafayette College where he signed to play basketball.

“They really wanted me, and they let it known that I was their guy,” said Stout. “They came to a lot of my games and practices, and some schools didn’t do all of that.”

Stout is a two-sport athlete and will be playing volleyball in the spring. He was a key player on a team that won last year’s state championship.
