Cross seeks state title
There is not much that Devante Cross hasn’t accomplished in the sports scene during his Parkland career. The senior has won multiple champions, a total of eight district titles across two sports, and has earned league MVP honors in both football and basketball.
The one title that has evaded Cross is a state crown. The Trojans’ football team was one win away last fall.
Cross has one final shot at being on top of the mountain in Pennsylvania. Parkland’s basketall team is 27-3 and has won 25 straight games, including a win in the first round of the PIAA tournament last Saturday.
Like the football team, the hoops team has had a hard time getting over the hill that is the second round. The Trojans football squad got that monkey off of their back in the fall. Now, Cross hopes to help lead the Trojans passed the second round and to a state final on the hardwood.
“We had a good run [in football],” said Cross. “And I’m looking forward to a long run at states [in basketball] now. Just like in football, we have the team that can do it.”
Cross has been a varsity member of the basketball team all four years, starting the last three years. His role on the team those four years have changed, but he has been the constant leader on the floor.
In his freshman and sophomore years, Cross played on the wing. Last year, with the graduation of four seniors, Cross was looked upon to be a scorer and averaged 14.1 points.
This year, with the entire starting lineup back from last season, Cross has been a facilitator. His scoring has dropped to just under 10 points per game, but a lot had to do with a long football season that saw Cross pick up an injury in the PIAA quarterfinal.
Along with fellow senior Jack Dreisbach, Cross has found his niche as more of a pass-first point guard.
“I just want to do whatever it takes for the team to win,” said Cross. “I hate losing, so even if I am not having a good game I want to make sure I do what I can so that our team can win.”
Cross came up through the Parkland Youth Center program and grew up playing against current teammates Dreisbach, Kyle Stout and Sam Iorio.
The Trojans are four wins from the ultimate goal of a state championship. It’s one last run for more gold for Cross and his teammates before he heads off to the University of Virginia and continue his football career.
Cross will also compete in the long jump and high jump during the track and field season.
