Trojans face unbeaten WVW

Goal number two for the Parkland football was accomplished last Friday night when it beat Easton 37-0, which was followed up by a 55-35 Wyoming Valley West victory over Liberty to give the Trojans the District 11 championship.

But they want more. They’ve been here before.

Now begins the quest for a PIAA state championship and all of its glory.

Parkland (11-1) opens up the state tournament traveling to Kingston Friday night to square off with District 2 champion and undefeated Wyoming Valley West (12-0).

“It’s awesome that we get to carry on that tradition of winning district titles,” said Devante Cross. “We just hope to take it further now.”

The Trojans took down Easton last Friday night with dominant performances on both sides of the ball. It was a performance for the ages in this rivalry, as in recent years, the games are close and sometimes come down to the last play (2014 District title game).

“Parkland teams have been known for winning lately, and we wanted to keep that up,” added Zach Bross. “When it comes to playoff time we want to win.”

But they will surely need a similar performance from its offensive and defensive units on Friday night. The Spartans have not lost a game yet and can put up points with the best of them. Liberty was one of the top scoring teams in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and they could not outscore them.

Junior do-it-all running back Sean Judge led the way, rushing for 122 yards and three touchdowns, and also hauling in six passes for 130 yards and a score. He also had an interception on defense.

“They are a good team,” said head coach Jim Morgans. “They do a lot of good things well, and that shows with their undefeated record.”

Like Parkland did against Easton, Wyoming Valley West scored a large chunk of its total in the second quarter to put the game out of reach. The Spartans scored 28 points to take a 42-21 lead at halftime.

The Trojans will look to put up points as they did versus the Red Rovers. Moving the ball well both on the ground and threw the air has been a staple to this offense this year. With Cross behind center, his favorite target Kenny Yeboah on the outside and fellow senior Erik DiGirolamo in the backfield, Parkland has shown a well-balanced attack.

This would be helpful if last week’s Hurricanes loss was any indication. Liberty scored five touchdowns on the night, three on the ground and two in the air. So Morgans and Frank Lane and his staff will need to mix and match.

Parkland will once again be practicing on Thanksgiving, which has always been a huge goal for this team. Now they look to reach the PIAA quarterfinals for the fourth straight year.
