Trojans get Del Val in districts

The Parkland football team bounced back nicely from a tough loss to Liberty a little over a month ago to finish the regular season on a high note at 9-1. The Trojans earned a co-championship in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. It’s their first title in the two-year old league.

With one goal achieved, Parkland has its eyes set on defending its district title when it opens the subregional playoffs Friday night against seventh seeded Delaware Valley. The No. 2 seed Trojans have faced Warriors several times over the last four years.

The two teams had a nonleague home and home series in 2012 and 2013. They also met in districts last year, when the Trojans came out victorious en route to the district championship.

“We know them well,” said head coach Jim Morgans. “Last year in this same round they were the two seed and we were the seven seed. We had to go out there and it was a tough environment and they have a very good team. We are really happy to be able to start off at home, and the seniors want to keep playing on their home field.”

The Warriors are 7-3 and their only losses were to playoff teams. They were beaten by Upper Dublin, Scranton Prep, and Wyoming Valley West, who is the top seed in this year’s subregional tournament. Del Val is coming off of a 35-12 win last weekend against Wallenpaupack Area High School.

“They are coached by an ex-Penn State player [Keith Olsommer] so they are a hard-nosed team and play physical football,” said Morgans. “He is a good coach and knows what he is doing. They will be prepared.”

Del Val runs a balanced offense that does not feature any go-to guy.

Quarterback Matt Cavallaro has thrown for 975 yards and 8 touchdowns, but has been intercepted 12 times. The Warriors top target on offense is wide receiver Dylan Kelly, who has 13 catches for 275 yards and 4 touchdowns on the season.

“Like in years past, they have some athletes that can do things with the ball in their hands,” Morgans said. “But they are in a bit of a rebuilding mode this year.”

If Parkland wins this week’s contest, it will host again next week against the winner of Friday’s No. 3 Freedom vs. No. 6 Easton game. If Wyoming Valley wins out, it will host the title game. If WVW gets knocked off in either of the next two weeks, the Trojans could host the championship game with a pair of wins in the next two weeks.
