Trojan tennis players compete in postseason

Parkland’s top two singles tennis players paired up for last week’s District 11 doubles tournament.

Patricia Yao and Madi Staiman earned the No. 7 seed in the tournament and won their first two matches last Wednesday before falling to the No. 2 see Friday in the quarterfinal round.

“To make it to the quarterfinals in district doubles is definitely a great accomplishment, especially give their youth,” Parkland head coach Michael Haingston. “They haven’t had a chance to play a whole lot of doubles together.

“It’s encouraging for the future. I told them when they came off, they made it to quarters this year now they have to go deeper next year. They smiled and said that’s their goal.”

Yao, a freshman who played No. 1 singles this season, made it to the quarterfinal round of the district singles tournament just a week earlier before falling to the No. 1 seed and eventual champ, Nina DeLuna of Southern Lehigh.

In last week’s doubles tournament, Yao and Staiman won their first match 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 and got through their second match 6-1, 6-0 before meeting Freedom’s Natalie Sinai and Kaitlyn Swaint in the quarterfinals and falling 6-1, 6-0.

“I thought we got off to a slow start but overall I thought we played really well today,” said Staiman, a junior. “The wind was a very hard component today but our net game and our rally game picked up and toward the end we gave it our best.”

The postseason was duo’s first time playing together and they plan to learn from this year and be better next season.

“I’ll definitely learn from this year and I’ll improve on that and I’ll come back stronger this year,” said Yao.

The Trojans sent two other doubles teams to districts. Ally Grob and Ally Brunell lost their first-round match to a team from East Strodsburg North, 6-1, 6-4. Sabrina Ghosh and Jessica Marsh lost their first-round match 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 to Whitehall’s Emily Snyder and Sam Nino.

Parkland also finished play in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Tournament recently.

The tournament began October 1 at Pocono Mountain East High School and after several weather postponements, the event was completed Saturday at Parkland High School.

Ghosh and Marks made the deepest run of any Trojans in the even.

At No. 3 doubles, Ghosh and Marks beat Allen Ruth Stuart and Rachel Serrano and then downed Easton’s Hallie Hoflien and Sidney Case in the quarterfinals. They lost their quarterfinal match to eventual champs Gabby Duffy and Tori Evert of Bethlehem Catholic.

At No. 2 doubles Grob and Brunell opened with a win over Gia Peck and Giselle Mosquera of East Stroudsburg North before falling to Whitehall’s Snyder and Nino in the quarterfinals.

At No. 1 singles, Yao beat Pocono Mountain West’s Jolanta Dzimira in the first round before falling to top seed and eventual champ Elessa Jacobs (Easton) in the quarterfinals.

At No. 2 singles, Staiman dropped her opening match to Central Catholic’s Olivia Luchetti.

Parkland’s Kristina Shum had to win a pigtail match against Nadia Hussein (East Stroudsburg South) to get into the main bracket at No. 3 doubles. She fell to top seed and eventual champ Brooke Adams (Bethlehem Catholic) in the first round.

At No. 4 doubles, Parkland’s Maanasir Gothoskar and Addy Averill lost their first-round match to a pair from Freedom.
