Trojan boys win DeSales Invitational title

The Parkland cross country teams opened their season last Saturday at the 37th Annual DeSales University Centaur Invitational.

The boys varsity team has big goals for this season and the Trojans looked on schedule to achieve those goals.

Led by top-five finishes from Hailemichael Geiger and Dan Kyvelos, the Parkland boys won the varsity team title by seven points over second-place Owen J. Roberts.

“We have a very strong team this year and we’ve been working over the summer,” said Geiger, a junior who finished second at DeSales with a time of 16:35. “All that work pays off.”

Kyvelos took fourth place overall, followed by teammates Sam Morgan (14th), Matthew Bianco (18th), Nicholas Bower (30th), Steven Kaleycik (31st) and Jacob Ringer (34th).

The Trojans return all but one runner from a team that finished second in the district and 15th at states last season. With all the returning talent, they hope to get back to states and contend as a team this season.

“We were preseason ranked fourth in the state,” said Kyvelos, who is one of just two seniors that ran for Parkland in the DeSales’ varsity race. “We wanted to prove a point today that not only are we going to win, but we’re going to give it our all and show people we’re serious about cross country this year. We want to get top five at states. As long as we take it serious, we’re going to have a great season and prove a point to teams all over the state.”

Parkland’s girls team is in the midst of a rebuilding year. Just five runners competed in the DeSales varsity girls race for Parkland. The Trojans still earned a seventh-place finish out of 16 teams, led by junior Sydney DelVecchio’s seventh-place finish.

“I wanted to just go out and try my best,” said DelVecchio. “I really wanted to medal so I’m fairly happy with how I did today.”

Medals went to the top 25 finishers in the varsity race.

The rest of the Parkland varsity line up included Kiera Segan (35th), Erin Wood (37th), Haley Havighurst (57th) and Natalie Britton (74th).

Havighurst was the only senior in Parkland’s girls varsity line up at DeSales. The line up included three sophomores.

“We won last year but we lost a lot of our seniors,” said DelVecchio, a junior. “Our goal was to try and get top five. I feel like we did really well. We work really well as a team together.

“We have a little bit of work because there’s so many new girls but we’re working really hard this season and I hope we do pretty well.”

Parkland fared well in several of the subvarsity races held at DeSales.

The Trojans won the boys junior varsity race, led by seniors Devender Dayal’s (first place), Tyler Gaspar (second place) and Justin Bergen (fourth place).

Parkland girls took second place in the JV race as sophomore Kiley Krasley placed third and Abigail Sheridan was fourth.

Parkland boys won the freshmen team title behind a fifth-place finish from Benjamin Alden.

Parkland took third in the middle school boys race as Nathan Reimer placed fourth on the two-mile course. The Trojan middle school girls team finished in second place with Jill Bushinsky leading the way in tenth place.
