Trojans end summer as Stellar champions
The two prominent high school boys summer league tournaments were unkind to the Parkland boys basketball team in terms of championships. The Trojans lost in the final of the Stellar tournament to Archbishop Carroll and fell in the semifinal of Sportsfest to eventual champ Nazareth.
But Parkland ended its summer on a high note, bringing home the Stellar/Allentown Summer League title two weeks ago, defeating Bangor 59-37 at Cedar Beach Park.
The Trojans, who missed a number of key guys during the summer due to injuries or AAU tournaments, had nearly a full team, with only Devante Cross missing the league championship game.
Parkland connected from deep on nine three-pointers, and in taking home the title, took some momentum heading into what could be another promising season in the winter.
"The guys off the bench improved and showed that they can play," said Trojan head coach Andy Stephens. "The lifting program that Mike Cerimele has developed for us has really been beneficial. All of the guys that don't play and weren't lifting as much, the lifting has made them stronger and they're starting to fill out a little more. That's going to help us in the winter."
One of those missing pieces from much of the summer was Kyle Stout. The rising senior was back and delivered in a big way, scoring 13 points in his long awaited return to the court.
"I was having a lot of fun in the first half tonight and I was thinking how much fun I could have had playing in Stellar and Sportsfest," Stout said. "In my first game back after the injury in an AAU tournament, I was a little hesitant. But as the games went on and I started feeling better, and especially tonight I felt good. It was good to be back with my team, moving the ball around and doing what we do."
And moving the ball around was just what they did. Two other players notched double digits with Michael Zeky and Kenny Yeboah tallying 14 and 11 points, respectively. Zeky had four three-pointers.
As the Slaters hung around in the first half, trailing just 20-16, Parkland closed the half on a 19-2 run, and then added the first seven points of the second half to put the game in complete control.
Sam Iorio, who arrived just as the first half was winding down, scored seven points in the second half in the win.
