Parkland rising senior Siena Salvaggio had a year that many high school student-athletes would love to have. Starting in the fall, Salvaggio was a striking force at the net as an outside hitter for the 2014 state champion Trojan volleyball team. A few months later, she took the stand as a state champion in the pool for the 50- and 100-yard freestyle.

Salvaggio was also voted the Parkland Press Female Athlete of the Year for the 2014-15 season.

"Winning states was a dream come true," Salvaggio said. "Coach [Mike] Krause wanted another banner. We were motivated after being so close last year. Everyone was focused going into the season, and it was definitely a team effort in bringing home the state title.

"Both coaches helped me out a lot, as did the seniors. Volleyball training really helped me when I was in the water with all of the conditioning. Three state medals for two sports is just so surreal."

Salvaggio has been a part of a winning program for most of her time at Parkland. Krause has a lot of experience coaching the sport, and has led his teams to several league and district titles, including both the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11 championships in 2014.

Just like on the court, in the pool Salvaggio has found success, albeit on an individual level.

In the winter of 2014, she came up one-hundredth of a second short of winning the gold at states. But that gave her more motivation to get the job done in 2015 at Bucknell University.

"I definitely used that .01 as motivation just to get through the season and just work hard every day on all the little things I can improve," said Salvaggio. "I think having a different outcome this year is such an amazing honor."

The 100 free was won with a time of 49.61, and the 50 free at 23.10 seconds.

It was a different year of events for Salvaggio, as she dropped the 200 free from the year before.

Salvaggio admitted she loves both sports, but knew she had to make a choice for her future. Earlier this year, Salvaggio committed to Penn State University for swimming. She is a fourth generation Penn State student.

"There is a lot of mutual respect and I know a lot about the school," Salvaggio said. "A lot of my family went there, Taylor [Krause] goes there and Kelly [Robertson] was there. The coaches and athletes there really made me feel welcomed."

This summer has been spent preparing for both upcoming seasons with volleyball in the fall and then the final high school swimming season beginning around November.

"I'm swimming with my club team, the PAC, and playing club volleyball for the East Coast Power, which is coached by coach Krause," said Salvaggio. "We have nationals in New Orleans this summer, which will be a great experience. We're working hard for the upcoming season. We want to defend our title."

Salvaggio credits the coaches and staff at Parkland, with its good balance of academics and athletics, for her success.

It will be hard to top the 2014-15 season, but Salvaggio is poised to do so.
