Another weekend, another prominent summer tournament championship for the Parkland girls basketball team.

A week after brining home the Stellar Tournament title, the Trojans were back at it, this time coming in first place in the Sportsfest A-town Throwdown Tournament last weekend at Cedar Beach Park.

In advancing to the championship game on Sunday evening, Parkland took down Dunmore, Notre Dame (Green Pond) and Northwestern in the single-elimination style format. The opening three days were round robin pool play. Parkland was unbeaten in their group.

On Sunday night, the Trojans capped off a 4-0 day with a 31-27 victory over Liberty.

"It's awesome," said head coach Wes Spence. "The girls worked really hard and I'm very happy for them. Everybody puts in a lot of time and effort and it's good to reap the benefits of that hard work."

Just as Parkland won two tournament titles in a row, rising senior forward Nadine Ewald won the tournament's MVP for the second weekend in a row.

Ewald and Rachel Medler both scored eight points in helping keep the Trojans in front.

They started off up 9-2, but the lead quickly dwindled. The Hurricanes scored the next nine points and actually led 19-16 at halftime, but then missed shots and good defense from the Trojans helped them claw their way back.

"It's a war of attrition at this point in the tournament," said Spence. "It's a matter of just staying with it, and staying with it, and staying with it. I don't think either team made many first chances. It was a matter of getting second and third chances and getting the easiest chances."

The Trojans defense certainly stepped up and didn't allow any easy chances for Liberty in taking back the lead in the second half.

"We worked really hard to play good team defense on some of their top scorers," Spence added. "I thought we moved the ball well and tried to create opportunities for our team."

Now Parkland will try to use this momentum and winning experience as a spring board to the winter varsity season, where it will look to improve from a 16-11 season last year.
