It was a new week, and it was a different week for the Emmaus girls basketball team.

Moving from one prominent summer tournament to another. After competing in the Stellar Construction Tournament two weeks ago, the Hornets moved on to the SportsFest A-town Throwdown last weekend. They achieved their main goal of making it to Sunday once again.

Emmaus won two games in the pool play style format, different from the double-elimination style at Stellar. They defeated Catasauqua on Thursday night and took down Shenandoah Valley on Saturday morning inside Parkland's gym.

The tournament ended for Emmaus girls on Sunday morning with a tough loss to Northwestern.

"The girls came to play this weekend and I am very proud of them for that," said head coach Carl Scheitrum. "They played strong defense and pushed the ball well in transition. Two wins in pool play and playing on Sunday was great for us."

The Green Hornets started SportsFest with a bang by taking down Catty 39-17 behind ten points apiece from Jenna Lessel and Bri Hart.

With a slight rain on Saturday morning, the games were moved inside Parkland high school's gymnasium. The change of venue didn't matter, as Emmaus once again won, this time holding on to a lead and beating Shenandoah 31-25.

But with the humidity in the air after the rain, it looked as if the Green Hornets didn't have it in the night cap of the group stage, falling to Liberty 47-26.

"The win against Shenandoah showed a lot of our girls," said Scheitrum. "We had an early lead and then they started coming back and putting pressure on us. It was a good win for the girls to have. But I think they were just worn out at the Liberty game and they got the better of us."

In the elimination round on Sunday, the Tigers got the better of the Green Hornets 37-26 in the heat.

"We battled them tough, but they are a great program every year," said Scheitrum. "Some things didn't go our way though. And the heat got to them, but they never gave up."

Now after two weeks of four-plus games against quality competition in the heat, Scheitrum is giving the girls a breather until open gyms the second week of September. They will also train individually with a workout packet given to them by the coaching staff.
