PHS doubles team falls in first round of state tennis tourney

The Parkland boys tennis season officially came to an end recently when Peter Harrison and Nick Kshatri played in the PIAA Tournament as a doubles team. The pair lost their first round match to Dane Bendel and Charlie Strohl of Mt. Lebanon High School by a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.

To say that Harrison and Kshatri lost to a good pair of players would be an understatement. Bendel and Strohl went on to play in the state Class AAA finals, dropping a straight-set decision to players from North Allegheny High School.

"Nick and Peter played well at states," said coach Michael Hingston. "They played a nearly flawless first set and won 6-2. The team from Mt. Lebanon found another gear and started to play great doubles. Their returns were especially impressive. It was a great learning experience and we hope to build upon that for next season."

For Harrison, the loss ends a tremendous high school career that saw him help Parkland to titles in both the conference regular season championship and tournament championships in each of his four seasons, playing in roughly half of the 126-match win streak that Parkland holds in league meets.

He was also a part of three Phoenixville Tournament Championships and three District 11 Championships. Harrison was also named to the 2014 all-conference team in the LVC.

"He was a team co-captain for us this year and had a tremendous career; our team will miss him," said Hingston.

The good news is that Kshatri returns next season as a senior, looking to build on his impressive career as both a singles and doubles player.

This season Kshatri won the Phoenixville Tournament singles championship and was the runner-up in the District 11 singles tournament, in addition to reaching states in doubles. In individual meets, the only two losses that Kshatri suffered this season were to Freedom's Andrew Sinai, who is generally considered to be the top singles player in the area, and to Emmaus' Matt FitzMaurice in the District 11 Championship.

"Nick had another great year," said Hingston. "He is a great leader and he works well with his teammates to help raise the level of their play. We look forward to a great senior year from Nick in 2016."

The year was another successful one for Parkland, which reached district finals in the team meet and saw Kshatri play in the district singles finals.

The Trojans fell to Freedom in the team championship at districts, but their 126 consecutive match win streak in conference play remains intact.

While this year's team graduates seven seniors, they will have five senior players next season, including Kshatri and Nate Lyman, who also figured prominently in singles play.
