Boys lacrosse looks back, and ahead
Northampton's boys lacrosse team may have went through an 0-16 season, but that doesn't change the perception that head coach Joe Engleby has for this year's team.
"This was a season of perseverance for the team," Engleby said. "We suffered a slew of injuries very early this season that depleted our ranks at some of our most seasoned positions.
"In addition, thankfully, we brought on another group of new players who overcame a lack of fundamental skills at the start to help overcome deficiencies toward the end of the season."
The experience is what Engleby hopes will pay off for his group as the future of Northampton lacrosse continues to grow.
"Our team grew in a multitude of ways," Engleby said. "While our injuries were devastating to a young team, they offered up opportunities to our young players to play, compete in games and practice situations they otherwise may not have had. I would expect our team to take this experience and run with it and build for next season. The most important takeaway is that our players ended up much better by the end of the season and were actually playing a higher level of lacrosse than we were able to reach last year. That was our ultimate goal, we just took a different road to reach it."
The major losses to graduation for the Kids include Josh Bealer (LSM) and Ty Marinelli (defenseman).
They're also losing Josh Bealer, an LSM and team leader and Ty Marinelli, a stalwart defenseman.
With a winless spring behind them, Engleby wants to focus on building through the youth and improving Northampton lacrosse every step of the way.
"We believed we were going to win a few games this season, but the injuries really hurt," he said. "Other than that, winning really isn't our focus. Learning the game and how to be competitive at all positions is.
"We had players this year that really stepped up, playing positions they had never played before and contributed greatly to our goal of mastering and implementing lacrosse skills. As a program we truly believe we accomplished our goal of becoming better players and a better team."
