Kids begin summer basketball season

For Northampton head boys' basketball coach Coy Stampone and his program, it's about continuing to take meaningful steps in his program.

Last season after the program won a total of five games in its two previous seasons, Northampton ended the year with an overall 13-10 record.

The Konkrete Kids made districts for the first time since 2010 and barely missed making the league playoffs.

So now, the Kids are faced with taking another major step forward despite losing recent graduates Basem Azar, A.Q. McNeil, and Garrett Oplinger, all of whom were instrumental in the revival of the program.

Also, Aidan Elwood, who burst onto the scene as a freshman last year, has transferred to Allentown Central Catholic.

In their quest, the Kids recently began play in the Cedar Beach Summer League, and had played three games after last weekend. It will be the first of a few maneuvers this summer to keep the program in their new class.

"We played three games and we had three close losses," said Stampone, who is beginning his fourth year at the helm. "This club likely will have a different look to it this year. But this is summer and the time when we want to get a good look at everyone."

Stampone will look to returning incoming seniors Mario Delker and Noah Rindock along with junior Morgan Heffelfinger as a current returning nucleus.

Incoming seniors Brian Morris and Tyler Miller ,juniors Jamari Austin and Tanner Hahn along with sophomore Ryan Keenan all should get some valuable minutes this winter.

"We'll be a lot smaller this year," stressed Stampone. "We may look to run more and play a more up-tempo game. We also may try to press more because we will have a smaller, quicker lineup. That can also give us the option to put more guards on the floor."

Stampone expects to have a busy summer as this team will travel to Albright College for a team camp and also participate in the Stellar and Sportsfest tournaments. In addition, there are weight room workouts three times a week, and weekly open gyms .

"It is what it is right now," offered Stampone. "We started the same way last year as we weren't sure what was going to happen and we had a good season. We'll work hard and we'll be busy. The kids are working hard now and we'll just keep everything rolling forward."
