Girls overcame slow start to season
As Northampton softball coach Kevin Mann looked back at this season's 16-9 record, he walked away with a sense of mixed results.
"Our girls underachieved and even from their expectations, the girls feel the same way," the second-year coach added.
"A little more of this and a little more of that," is what Mann said his team needed. "We got a perfect draw in the districts, but fell short in the semifinals against Easton (a 4-0 loss).
"We hoped to do better than last year when we went 17-7 and lost in the Lehigh Valley Conference and District 11 semifinals. But we wound up losing in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and District 11 semis again this year," said Mann.
"We started slow (losing the first three games) but we knew we were better than that. Like, the girls asked 'what's going on?' and they put their noses to the grindstone and once we got traction we started winning regularly," concluded Mann.
Mann, who was assisted by Jeff Bernhard and Chelsea Lubenesky, is looking forward to next year "when we will be even better."
Mann cited this year's 17-3 record for the junior varsity under Julie Maurek and Andy Snyder as a reason to be optimistic.
As for the Konkrete Kids individual statistics, they speak for themselves.
Senior Amber Saylor batted .385 with 21 RBIs and 19 runs scored; senior Ali Reppert hit .233 with 17 singles; senior catcher Kendal Reed was .351 with 20 RBIs and 18 runs scored; and senior Samantha (Sam) Frey hit .255 as the designated player and was 1-0 as a pitcher and also had 10 RBIs.
Junior third baseman Auria Enright, an EPC All-Star, was the team's top hitter with a .484 average and had 32 singles. Sophomore shortstop Hallie Muffley wound up with 19 walks as the leadoff batter and hit .320 with 10 RBIs and freshman Lindsay Stuhldreher hit .294 with seven RBIs and a home run in less than half as season with the varsity.
Junior Emily Schwartz (1.000 fielding percentage at first base), Maura Moser, Clara Wallace (1-0 as a pitcher) and Jolene Makovsky all contributed immensely.
Pitchers Jillian Muthard and Taylor Keeney, both sophomores, picked up 14 wins between them with Muthard getting 91 strikeouts with a 1.75 ERA, while Keeney had 57 K's with a 1.16 ERA.
