LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Street sweeping takes entire week

Street sweeping in Coplay each spring is usually a routine task, but last week it was anything but routine as the usual two-day task of cleaning all the streets took the entire week.

Rather than having a private contractor with a mechanized sweeper clean the streets, as was the custom for years, the borough borrowed the North Catasauqua sweeper.

With a winter that resulted with more grit and grime on the streets, the borough used more materials than customary to ensure the roads stayed open.

The borough public works supervisor and an employee helped with a shovel, throwing the debris onto a front end loader in some areas ahead of the street sweeper.

And on Friday, making certain the job is complete, there were three street sweepers finishing the task.

Borough personnel, already short handed, put up American flags along Chestnut and Second streets.

The citizens' committee that raised funds for the project will no longer have to raise funds from residents as the borough will now take on the responsibility.

And rather than relying on Northampton's bucket truck to put up the flags and Christmas decorations, the borough is looking to acquire a used bucket truck. One such available bucket truck is going for under $5,000.

Replying to some families who questioned if borough children can attend Camp Whitehall this summer, the answer is yes.

The day camp will be open to borough children, with a school bus picking up the children in the morning and returning them in the late afternoon.

The children can enroll for one week, or more, including the entire summer camp program.

A reminder that the Coplay Parkway Pool opens Saturday, June 6, for the weekend.

The official daily summer opening of the pool is slated for Saturday, June 12. The borough now has a full lineup of certified lifeguards for the community pool.
