Kids softball season ends with loss to Rovers

"Like I said last week," Coach Kevin Mann repeated Tuesday night: "Whoever takes advantage of the other team's misplays will win and tonight that's what happened to us."

Coach Mann's Konkrete Kids fell 4-0 to No. 3 seed Easton in the District 11 Class 4A semifinal game at Parkland and the Kids' misplays hurt.

The Kids, who finish 16-9, got only four hits - two in the seventh - as Easton rebounded from the Rovers' 10-0 pounding by Northampton back on April 6.

The Red Rovers of Coach Ed McIntyre are now 17-6 and will face Parkland in the District 11 championship Thursday at Allentown's Patriots Park. Parkland shutout Liberty in Tuesday's other semifinal game.

"Easton took advantage of our misplays in the third inning to score three times and that was it," said Mann. "I told the Kids after the game we just were not ready to take that final big step, and that's my fault."

Mann pointed out that his teams have reached the league and district semifinals the last two years "but can't take that final leap."

After beating No. 2 seed Pottsville 5-1 last Thursday, the Kids "worked like crazy at practice to keep hitting. But we just couldn't get it done" against Easton's Meagan Kavanagh.

Kavanagh gave up single to Hallie Muffley to start the game, but Northampton didn't get another hit until Auria Enright's one-out single in the sixth. Northampton got pinch-hit singles from Emily Schwartz and Clara Wallace but they were left stranded in scoring position.

Easton's third inning started with a swinging bunt single by Kyra Stanilous. Emily Stanilous reached on losing pitcher Jillian Muthard's throwing error and the Rovers had runners on second and third. Pinch-runner Lindsay Shimkus scored on catcher Kendal Reed's throwing error on Maddie McConnell's bunt and Kavanagh delivered a two-run single.

Easton's fourth run came in the sixth on Kylee Sutton's double, a wild pitch and Hannah Wieller's groundout RBI.

"It's like a roller coaster - it's exciting when you get near the top, but then the ride's too short," said Mann.
