Kids look back with hope for future
You can say that Northampton's volleyball team was a group of over-achievers this past season, but you can also say they played as a team.
The K-Kids saw their campaign come to an end following a five set defeat to Whitehall in the District 11 quarterfinals, but first-year head coach Dave Faust knows that his team gave everything they had from their 9-7 spring.
"I guess you can say the sum of its parts are greater than any individual piece," Faust said. "We had a lot of holes to fill from last year and the guys did a great job and in some cases over-achieved. They played as a team and did what they had to do."
Qualifying for the East Penn Conference playoffs, as well as the District 11 postseason proved to be fruitful for Northampton, but losing to Whitehall twice in the regular season and in the playoffs proved to be a hurdle the Kids couldn't overcome.
"I'm not sure if they [Whitehall] had our number or not, but we just made a lot of mistakes against them," said Faust. "I know their coach [George Cowitch] very well and he does a great job with them. They took advantage of our weaknesses and were able to get the better of us three times."
Northampton graduates five seniors from this years team, including EPC all-star Josh Morgan, Matt Motto, who was second on the team in digs and setter Dave Capano.
"We're losing some big pieces for sure," Faust said. "We have a lot of work to do in the off-season, but the program is in a good place. We're losing a lot of leadership from this group, but we have a good freshman class coming up and our middle school numbers have the most kids we've ever had.
"If we can keep building, we'll do fine. The success we've been having as of late certainly helps keep the interest in volleyball going up."
