Kids making a move Won 7 straight before loss; tough week ahead

Early in the season, Northampton boys volleyball coach Dave Faust had a feeling his club could peak at the right time.

That feeling still prevailed despite his club dropping their first two matches. Back then, his premonition also could have been easily deterred as he put a new system into place as his first year as the boys head coach.

A week later, the Konkrete Kids (8-3) were on a different path as they began an impressive seven-game winning streak that has resulted in a district playoff berth and also kept them in the hunt for the East Penn Conference playoffs.

In fact, all of their wins during the streak were in three-consecutive matches. The Kids began the week seeded third in the PIAA District 11 Class AAA power rankings.

"This is not that big of surprise for me," said Faust, who previously served as the head girls coach. "The boys have really played well and we have had great teamwork in the process. We have exceeded all expectations and even some expectations of mine.

"In every game, we have really rose to the occasion. It has been very impressive how we have went out and taken control of games.

"Our goal was to get better every game and then qualify for the district playoffs. We proved to ourselves that we could do that and now we can keep moving forward. It is a real credit to these guys."

Seniors Josh Morgan, Dave Cattano, and Matt Mattou all have utilized their experience with the club, but it truly has been a total team effort that has lifted the Kids to another level.

"Our seniors have really done a great job," added Faust. "But we really have put it all together on all levels. The guys have really grown as a team and you can see the results on the court.

"We're all very close and we have good chemistry here," said Morgan, who noted that the team often has weekend dinners to further cement their bond. "We have all come together at the right time."

The Kids will have more challenges ahead this week when they hosted Parkland on their senior night Wednesday, after Press deadlines, and then finish the season with Nazareth Thursday.

The Kids did see their win streak snapped with a loss to Whitehall on Monday. NHS fell in four very close sets, 27-29, 25-27, 25-19 and 27-29.

But, Faust is optimistic his club can continue to ride the wave.

"We have a big week ahead," he said. "We're more confident right now and we know what is ahead for us. We know we still have some work to do."

Press photo by Bob Brandmeir Austin Cooper and the Kids rattled off seven-straight wins before falling to Whitehall. The team faces more tough matches this week, however.
